Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson has said International Peace Day is an opportunity to build on the success of the peace process here.
The theme for 2016 is ‘Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace’. It is designed to call on UN countries to begin efforts to achieve sustainable development goals agreed by member nations at a major conference in New York last year.
East Antrim MLA, Stewart Dickson, said: “The event was important in strengthening the ideals of peace throughout the world.
“The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals allow a shared vision for people around the world; helping achieve peace as well as fighting against poverty, hunger, social inequality and environmental challenges among others.
“While International Peace Day is a global event, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made so far in Northern Ireland, while concentrating on the work that still needs to be done to build a genuinely shared future for all in our community.”
